7 Characteristics of an Ideal Irvine Personal Training Client

lazy client 7 Characteristics of an Ideal Irvine Personal Training Client Let’s face it, Orange County is the center of the fitness world on the West Coast, without a doubt! There are more personal trainers and personal training clients in this county than just about anywhere in the civilized world! While it’s critical for you as a client to find the trainer that is right for you, it’s equally as important to ensure that you have what it takes to be a great personal training client.

The “ideal Irvine personal training client” is not a list of requirements that need to be met in order to see results with personal training, but is more of a set of measurable benchmarks that clients should strive to meet and improve upon as they learn and grow with their trainer. The truth is, the more in-line with each of these traits a personal training client is, the better results they will see, in less time and with more consistency.

As an Irvine personal trainer, I have had my fair share of nightmare clients—clients who seem to actively work to sabotage their own results—but having even one client that shares the characteristics below makes it all worth it. So, if you’re currently searching for an Irvine personal trainer that meets your standards of excellence, hopefully this article can help you ensure that you also do what it takes to get the most out of your training.

Ideal Irvine Personal Training Client Characteristic #1: Punctual

First and foremost, the ideal personal training client should be on time to their sessions. This may seem like a no brainer, but I can’t count the number of times I’ve had clients show up late to their appointments. Sure, we all have a day here and there where crap hits the fan, we get stuck in Irvine traffic, and then get a ticket one block from our appointment destination, but if lateness becomes a habit for you, it’s something you will want to address quickly.

Punctuality is important for a number of reasons. First of all, your personal trainer likely will have a specific workout planned and is expecting to spend the entire session period on the workout. By showing up late, your trainer will have to edit the workout off the cuff, resulting in a sub par experience for you and adding unnecessary extra work for your personal trainer. Besides that, showing up late is just disrespectful and shows your trainer that you don’t care about their time. Don’t be “that client”.

Ideal Irvine Personal Training Client Characteristic #2: Committed

Being committed to your training and to achieving your results is the difference between success and failure! Look, I would be lying if I told you personal training is easy. Working out is hard, and to see good results you need to accept that many workouts are going to be a little uncomfortable, you’re going to sweat a lot and are very likely going to have some soreness during the following day or two. Commitment is what keeps you coming back for more, and in the end, is what nets you those amazing results that cause everyone who looks at you to go, “DANG!” This isn’t an aspect of yourself that anyone but you can work on—not your trainer, not your friends—just you!

Ideal Irvine Personal Training Client Characteristic #3: Open Minded

It’s imperative that you’re open to learning from your trainer. Many personal training clients come into their first sessions with preconceived notions of what is and what isn’t proper exercise technique, selection, etc. It’s important to remember that you are hiring a trainer because they are the expert and will guide you to your goals if you let them. Your trainer may have you doing unfamiliar exercises, or even refuting many of the concepts that you previously took as fact, but as long as you’ve done your research and hired a quality Irvine trainer, then being open to these new techniques and concepts could be the difference between newfound success and continuing along the current, ineffective status-quo.

That being said, there definitely are personal trainers in Irvine who have their clients performing unsafe and ineffective “circus acts,” so while it’s important to be open-minded, if things are causing you pain or you’re not seeing results, then it’s certainly ok to ask questions. If your trainer can’t answer your questions satisfactorily, it might be time to find another one.

Ideal Irvine Personal Training Client Characteristic #4: Positive

Having a positive mindset is crucial to the success of your training efforts. When you’re positive, you’re more likely to remain committed, stay consistent with your nutrition and cardio, and are more likely to give each training session your all. Being that each of these factors is important to your success, it is pretty clear that thinking positively can make a large impact.

Ideal Irvine Personal Training Client Characteristic #5: Communicative

Even the best personal training clients occasionally slip on their diet, forget to do their cardio sessions, get injured or get sick. It’s important to remember your personal trainer is a resource for you to use to help meet your goals, not a “health police” officer whose job it is to punish you for making mistakes. As such, it does you no good to hide information from your trainer. If you’re feeling sick of your nutrition program, having muscular or joint pain, or have been too busy to find time for your extra workouts you do on your own, you need to let your trainer know so he or she can determine whether they need to adjust your program to meet your lifestyle, or whether you need a heart to heart to really figure out what’s going on.

Ideal Irvine Personal Training Client Characteristic #6: Goal Oriented

Having goals is absolutely crucial to your success, and may in fact be the most important factor of all. Without a clear cut goal to work towards, your training efforts are going to be akin to driving around an unfamiliar city without a map or GPS system—you’re not going to get to where you want to go without a roadmap to take you there. It’s important to ensure that the goals that you set for yourself are S.M.A.R.T. goals, that is, that they are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. By taking the time to think about and define these goals, you will be arming yourself with a powerful tool to help you achieve more than you ever thought possible.

Ideal Irvine Personal Training Client Characteristic #7: Passionate

The final characteristic of the ideal client is that of passion for their own health and happiness. Regardless of how committed you are, or how open-minded or communicative you may be, if you aren’t fiercely interested in attaining your optimal health and fitness then you aren’t going to last very long as a client, simply because you will subconsciously direct your attention towards the areas of your life that you are passionate about. Besides, if you love working out, then you’re not going to suffer through training sessions nearly as much as someone who attends their sessions out of obligation.
