How Does an Independent Irvine Fitness Trainer Differ From a Big Gym Trainer?

24 hour fitness escalator fail How Does an Independent Irvine Fitness Trainer Differ From a Big Gym Trainer? Most Irvine chain gyms, such as 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness, Bally’s, Gold’s Gym and Equinox have their own fitness trainers on staff that you can hire for one-on-one training. You may be asking yourself, “What’s the difference between hiring an Irvine fitness trainer from a gym and hiring a trainer who owns his or her own business? Is there one?” The respective answers to these questions are, “a ton” and “absolutely.”

Most chain gyms spend huge amounts of money on attracting the masses to their doors. They bank on the fact that a huge percentage of their customers will never again step foot in the gym after the day they pay for their membership—in fact, if every paying member actually showed up regularly to use the gym, the fire department would shut the place down within weeks due to severe overcrowding. For the members who do show up to use the facility, the gyms have another avenue of exploitation to make a ton of money—personal fitness training.

Fitness training at an Irvine chain gym is little more than a poorly-masked, regularly-scheduled sales pitch. It’s like if you signed up for a time share presentation and went to listen to the sales pitch three times per week—except that unlike time share presentations, you actually have to PAY to get pitched in fitness training (and you pay a lot). The trainers at gyms are not paid well—they typically make little over minimum wage and in order to make a decent living, must depend on commission from sales of supplements and additional training sessions. This is a terrible way to approach a relationship with a fitness training client, because instead of being focused on giving the clients amazing results, the poorly-paid, passionless trainer at a chain gym is only focused on making you buy supplements and more training sessions so that they can pay their rent.

If you ask 90% of folks who have experienced trainers at gyms, they will verify that what I just said is spot-on (the few who disagree got lucky and had the one-in-a-million fitness trainer who is actually of quality). The trainers see many dozens of clients each week, and typically have no individual concern for any one of their clients—once you walk out their doors they are onto the next client and completely forget about you until you arrive for your next session. The worst part is, Irvine fitness trainers at chain gyms typically charge way more for their services than independent fitness trainers do, and provide a lot less for the money (probably because they are only getting a tiny fraction of the money the member pays them). I know of a trainer at Sports Club LA who charges $199 per HOUR, and doesn’t even keep notes on his clients’ progress.

Independent fitness trainers in Irvine aren’t guaranteed to be better than chain gym trainers, but there is a much better chance that they are. First of all, these trainers depend almost entirely on client retention and referrals to make money, so their priority is to maximize customer satisfaction rather than to hard sell them at every opportunity. Additionally, the trainer makes most of the profit from the sale, so they are typically more passionate about their work since they aren’t working for slave wages.

Finally, since the independent fitness trainer doesn’t have the enormous sales machine that is 24 Hour Fitness or any of the other chain gyms bringing him or her an immense number of new clients on a regular basis, they tend to have fewer clients and have a much closer relationship with these clients. It is much more typical for an Irvine independent fitness trainer to provide an email address, phone number or Facebook page for clients to communicate with him or her on compared to gym trainers, who rarely are even allowed to contact clients outside of the sessions, not that they would if they could.

So, if your idea of a quality training program is an impersonal, expensive sales pitch 2-3 times per week with a trainer who would rather not be at work, then you should immediate head over to your nearest 24 Hour Fitness, LA Fitness or any of the other chain gyms—they’re all the same and will be perfect for you. On the other hand, if you would prefer to have a trainer who values you as a client, is focused on maximizing the value for the services you ALREADY paid for instead of trying to wring out every penny they can from you and has a strong passion for what they do, then you will definitely want to hire an independent fitness trainer and stay far, far away from the chain gyms.
