4 Secrets Costa Mesa Personal Trainers Don’t Want You to Know

bosu ball circus training 4 Secrets Costa Mesa Personal Trainers Dont Want You to KnowWith so many personal trainers in and around the Costa Mesa area, it can be hard to separate out the high-quality trainers from those that are not-so-high-quality. One of the biggest challenges for prospective Costa Mesa personal training clients is filtering through all the misinformation, marketing fluff and outright lies that permeate the fitness industry.

Unfortunately, like other industries such as, say, automobile and computer repair, unscrupulous personal trainers in the fitness industry bank on the fact that most Costa Mesa residents don’t have a deep understanding of the ins and outs of fitness or nutrition. Instead of taking the opportunity to educate the community on these concepts of how to adopt healthy habits to stay fit and energized, these unethical trainers choose to blanket their prospects and clients in a cloud of confusion to try to maximize their client retention—after all, if their client learns nothing during the training sessions, they will have no choice but to keep going back to that trainer for results, right?

My business mission is and has always been the opposite—I strive to help my clients and the Costa Mesa community at large learn to take care of themselves, so they don’t NEED a personal trainer to maintain their health if they don’t want one. Ironically, I’ve found that because of my “pay it forward” philosophy, I enjoy much higher client retention rates than the shady personal trainers who try to confuse their clients into loyalty. As such, I’d like to outline four of the biggest misconceptions perpetuated by many Costa Mesa personal trainers so that you don’t get caught in the web of lies and confusion that so many others have found themselves in.

Costa Mesa Personal Training Myth #1: You Can’t Get Results Without a Personal Trainer

Many trainers will try to tell you that without their help, there is no way you will achieve your goals. While it’s true that hiring an experienced trainer will help you maximize your results, minimize the risk of injury and get you to your goals as quickly as possible, it’s an unfair stretch of the truth to say that it’s completely impossible to be successful on your own. You should think of your personal trainer as a teacher, not as a miracle worker. Sure, you could study on your own for the bar exam and theoretically pass it, but it’s obviously going to be MUCH easier if you attend classes and allow an experienced professor to teach you the concepts in a digestible, progressive format.

Likewise, a Costa Mesa personal trainer with the experience to back his or her views is going to make your journey a lot easier than if you try to do it on your own, because a personal trainer can show you the most efficient route to your destination and help you avoid the immense level of trial and error that can otherwise occur. Thus, to change this myth into a truthful claim, I would say: you are much more likely to get optimal results and achieve success with a high quality Costa Mesa personal trainer than without one.

Costa Mesa Personal Training Myth #2: Everyone Should Train Like a Body Builder

Typically, this myth isn’t so much perpetuated by an active desire to trick people into thinking they need to train like a body builder as much as it is a byproduct of the laziness that characterizes many Costa Mesa personal trainers. Since most trainers are at an advanced level of personal fitness themselves (and they SHOULD be; hiring an out-of-shape personal trainer is like hiring a bankrupt financial advisor!), they tend to train with high volume, heavy weight and split their workouts into individual muscle groups. However, for most beginner to intermediate trainees, as well as anyone whose goals don’t center around maximum muscle mass gain, this type of training is useless.

Since most of these trainers are lazy however, they would rather copy/paste their own workout for their clients since it takes no additional work, as opposed to creating an individualized, goal-oriented workout program for the client from scratch. As a personal training client, you are paying good money for a personal trainer, so don’t you think you deserve to have an individualized program instead of some cookie-cutter workout that ignores your individual body type, fitness level and desired fitness goals? To rephrase this myth as a truth, I would say: each client should train in a manner that is tailored to his or her own goals, abilities and preferences.

Costa Mesa Personal Training Myth #3: You Need to Live on a BOSU Ball for Results

As the flip-side to myth #3, some trainers design ludicrous, circus-style workouts that belong in a Barnum & Bailey tent, not in the gym. BOSU balls, balance boards, TRX suspension trainers and stability balls all have their place in your training program, but should not dominate it. Free weights, body weight exercises and olympic lifting are time-tested, versatile and proven methods of increasing strength, muscular endurance and power and should make up the majority of an effective workout program. Specific exercise selection should of course be tailored to the clients’ goals, abilities and preferences, but the bottom line is if a program doesn’t include a hefty portion of movements falling into these categories, you’re going to be missing out on optimal results. To turn this false claim into a true one, I would say: you need a workout program that includes a variety of training modalities, but includes a significant emphasis on free weight training.

Costa Mesa Personal Training Myth #4: Whacky Nutritional Programs and Diets are Required for Success

This is probably the one that grinds my gears the most, simple because many diets out there are unsafe and can cause more harm than good. Besides all this, the much simpler (and typically cheaper) option to just eat a natural, balanced diet is by far the most effective form of nutrition for any goals, and is actually proven by science, unlike 99% of the alternatives out there. A Costa Mesa personal trainer who recommends an idiotic diet such as the raw diet, or juice fasting falls into one of two categories. Either they are too ignorant and inept to realize that the diet they are recommending is at best ineffective, and at worst totally unhealthy, or they have some sort of financial incentive to recommend the diet, which means that they don’t mind potentially putting their clients in danger as long as they make money. Do you want to put your health in the hands of either type of trainer?

A quality personal trainer will help guide you on the path of natural, balanced eating habits that don’t require expensive vitamins, equipment or arbitrary dieting rules, and will not hesitate to refer you to a qualified dietician/nutritionist for advanced topics out of the trainer’s area of expertise. To turn this myth into a truth, I would say: simple, balanced nutrition utilizing natural-state foods and avoiding complicated, whacky diets unsupported by science is the key to your success and safety.
